In honor
Barr Vaness Neilson “Van”
June 30, 1910 – September 24, 1996
Barr Vaness “Van” Neilson was born June 30, 1910, in Holladay, Utah, and passed away peacefully on September 24, 1996. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the ski troops of the 10th Mountain Division.
The 10th Mountain Division was a distinctive and consequential force in the Allied victory in Europe. Built around soldiers trained for extreme cold, skiing, mountaineering, and high-altitude combat, the division brought capabilities few other units possessed. After rigorous training in the American West, its troops entered combat in the mountains of northern Italy in 1945, helping break through heavily defended German positions and contributing to the final Allied advance in Italy. Their courage, endurance, and willingness to serve in extraordinarily difficult terrain made the division’s wartime record one of lasting significance.
Van’s service represents more than one man’s contribution; it stands with the service and sacrifice of all who have worn the uniform—those who answered the call before him, those who served alongside him during World War II, and the generations who have continued that commitment afterward. We remember Van with gratitude and honor the enduring legacy of every veteran who has defended the nation and its ideals.
